Relationship Hope

We often receive calls from people saying things like “Our marriage is hanging by a thread;” or “We just want to be able to say we gave it our best shot before calling it quits.” The discouragement is palpable. Hope for the future of their relationship has all but disappeared.

That’s where we come in. When you’re discouraged, we can help you find new, untried ways to move forward. We’ve been studying relationship dynamics for years, and we have the experience and expertise to help.

Trust

When we make repair attempts for a hurt we have committed, we begin to rebuild trust.  When we create dedicated time for our partners, or engage in what Dr. John Gottman calls “rituals of connection,” we rebuild trust. When we honor small moments of intimacy, again, we begin to rebuild trust.

We’re standing by to help you learn to rebuild and heal the broken trust in your relationship.

Communication

According to Dr. John Gottman, couples wait six years on average before seeking out therapy. That is six years of friction and plenty of time to develop destructive habits. Our Longwood relationship therapists are trained to diagnose communication concerns and prescribe corrective actions to reduce arguing, restore closeness, and promote a more constructive partnership.

Infidelity

If an affair has occurred in your relationship, recovering from the hurt and the pain can feel overwhelming. Although it can be a long and difficult process, recovery is possible. We’ve seen it hundreds of times.

Helping couples move through the different phases of recovery from infidelity: making amends, understanding what happened, and creating new, deeper attachments is what we do.

Intimacy

When referring to intimacy as sexual desire, people often worry that the relationship’s passion, romance, and sexual frequency has diminished to a point of no return. It can be helpful to know that it is typical for sexual desire to change as your relationship ages. At the same time, change doesn’t mean that your sex life has to fade away. One of the factors determining the success of your intimate relationship is all the small behaviors you do every day outside of the bedroom. Those small behaviors outside of the bedroom impact many aspects of your relationship, including your sex life.

Evidence-Based Relationship and Marriage Therapy

Our counseling is based on the most recent research available. While much of our work follows the findings of Drs. John and Julie Gottman, we also rely on the research of thought leaders like Dr. Sue Johnson, Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, and Dr. Brene Brown.

If you are new to counseling psychology, a lot has happened in the past 20 years. Advances in neuroscience are revolutionizing our understanding of the brain and how it works. And therapists are able to take that research and deliver life-changing results like never before. At Positive Steps, we are committed to bringing the best research and most proven therapeutic methods to you, our clients.

So no matter what your situation…whether you feel like your relationship is falling apart or you just hope to improve an already good relationship…there is hope. We can help you find positive changes to last a lifetime.

Qualified Longwood Marriage Counselors

Our Longwood marriage counselors seek to understand you and your partner, both as individuals and as a couple. We take the time to learn as much as we can about your history, goals, and current situation. In addition to our introductory discussions, we also ask one or more objective assessments to provide further insight into the dynamics of your relationship.

While you may be eager to “fix” your relationship as quickly as possible, it is important to keep in mind that therapy takes time, effort, and commitment. The initial information gathering process is time-consuming but is essential in understanding your partnership and developing your custom treatment plan.
